The European Aluminium Association’s annual Health and Safety Workshop has announced the winners of its Safety Solutions Competition.
The best solution, voted for by the workshop participants, was a practical training area within the plant with the ability to simulate work operations and thus address safety issues before they can arise in normal operations. This initiative was implemented by Alcoa’s San Ciprian Refinery in Spain.
The second best solution went to Alcan’s Montreuil Juigne & Carquefou plant in France for their saw blade handling system.
The third and final prize went to Alcoa’s Avilés plant in Spain for their crucible lid cleaning machine.
The competition, held for the second time, was set-up to highlight innovation, the potential for risk reduction and the applicability of the initiative. Successful entries are required to be simple, inexpensive solutions that have already been put in place within a plant, and that would be useful and applicable at other workstations.
The competition’s aim is to create a platform to give widespread visibility to great ideas on health and safety in the aluminium industry and to encourage the cross-fertilization of ideas and practices in the aluminium industry at large.
