"When aluminium technologies become cre@tive"
alumatter Symposium, 24 & 25 November 2005 - VUB, Brussels. The European Aluminium Association, in collaboration with the VUB (Dept Metallurgy, electrochemistry and Materials Science) & the Aluminium Center Belgium, will illustrate the achievements of the European project, alumatter, through a 2-days symposium on 24 & 25 November 2005. This European project, the last 3 years of which were co-funded by the European Commission's Leonardo da Vinci programme, has developed interactive modular resources on aluminium science and technology, freely accessible on internet. Twenty alumatter partners from the aluminium industry, technical centres or universities have contributed to the nine e-learning modules that respectively deal with: Strengthening Mechanisms, Softening Mechanisms, Anisotropy, Surface & Physical Properties, Mechanical Properties, Machining, Joining Technology, Forming Technology, Corrosion & Surface Engineering. The last six modules will be available in English, Dutch, French & German.

European aluminium industry ready to contribute to a more competitive Europe
the European Aluminium Association (EAA) met with Luxembourg's Presidency to the EU and other key representatives of the European Institutions. With this high-level forum, the aluminium industry is clearly showing its willingness to play an active part in reviewing the Lisbon process and has thus highlighted the challenges for its operations in Europe. In particular, the trends in the rise of energy prices and access to some raw materials make it difficult for European industry to compete with other regions. This event marked an important milestone in the ongoing Aluminium for Future Generations programme - the unwavering pledge of the European aluminium industry to progress through dialogue for sustainable progress.

The Atomium's aluminium cladding is ready for a new life
Designed for the Universal Exhibition of Brussels in 1958, the Atomium symbolises a magnified crystal molecule of metal. The building's aluminium cladding - initially conceived to last six months - has served its purpose for almost 50 years and is ready for a new life! Now that the Atomium is undergoing renovation, the original aluminium skin is about to serve new purposes. A thousand aluminium triangular panels are available for sale with a certificate of authenticity for collectors and Atomium enthusiasts. The remaining 30 tonnes of aluminium will be recycled.
