<title>Aluminium Study Featured on The New York Times - Green Blog</title>
<description><![CDATA[ <font color="#4d4d4d"><font size="2"><em>The New York Times</em> featured a new study conducted by the University of Aachen for the European Aluminium Association in their influential </font><a class="" href="http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/15/aluminum-body-a-plus-at-the-gas-tank/" target="_blank"><font size="2">Green Blog</font></a><font size="2">. The </font><a class="" href="http://www.eaa.net/files/eaa/documentslive/73/647_ika%20-%20stiffness%20&%20crash%20relevance%20-%20public%20version.pdf" target="_blank"><font size="2">study</font></a><font size="2"> shows that aluminum use in key automotive components can safely reduce vehicle weight by as much as 40 percent, compared to only 11 percent for high-strength steel. Reducing weight with </font><font size="2">automotive aluminium</font><font size="2"> allows vehicles to increase safety, while providing environmentally-friendly increased performance. </font></font>]]></description>

Ramos of Alcoa is the new EAA Chairman. Mr. Ramos succeeds Alcoa’s Rudi Huber who has successfully led the organisation as of the start of Alcoa’s EAA chairmanship January 1st, 2009. The appointment of Marcos Ramos as the new EAA Chairman follows the retirement of Mr. Huber which was announced by Alcoa in March. Marcos Ramos, President of Alcoa’s European Region and Primary Products Europe, will take on his role as Chairman of the EAA as of June 1st 2010, until the end of Alcoa’s EAA Chairmanship on December 31st 2010.</p>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ <p align="justify">&nbsp;</p><p align="justify">The European Aluminium Association (EAA) welcomes the <a class="" href="http://www.consilium.europa.eu/uedocs/cms_data/docs/pressdata/en/intm/114617.pdf" target="_blank">EU Competitiveness Council conclusions on clean and energy-efficient vehicles</a>. These conclusions constitute a positive first step in the direction of technology neutrality, with the Council stressing the importance of considering a wide range of technologies, and stressing the need to explore the opportunities offered by weight reduction.</p>]]></description>

<title>Aluminium beverage can recycling in the EU 27 increases to 63%</title>
<description><![CDATA[ <p> </p><p align="justify"><b>The overall recycling rate for aluminium beverage cans in the enlarged EU 27 including EFTA countries and Turkey further improved in 2008 and stands now at 63.1%. It has improved from 61.8% in 2007, respectively 57.7% in 2006. This 5.4% increase over the past two years represents an impressive extra carbon footprint saving of more than 310,000 tons of CO<sub>2</sub> equivalents.</b></p>]]></description>

<title>Making cars lighter - an essential contribution to the new European strategy on green vehicles</title>
<description><![CDATA[ <p> </p><p align="justify">The European Aluminium Association (EAA) supports the European Commission’s new strategy on greener vehicles. This proposal does represent a step forward in the creation of a better regulatory and fiscal environment that will stimulate demand for low CO<sub>2</sub> emitting cars. However, an integral part of this strategy should be the overall weight reduction of vehicles – one of the easiest and most cost effective measures that can be implemented immediately.  This has not yet been addressed comprehensively in the strategy and should be.</p>]]></description>

Lifecycle analysis shows that an aluminium solution yields both a 20 percent energy and CO<sub>2</sub> emissions reduction, compared to the traditional steel structure.</p>]]></description>

<title>EU Parliament&#8217;s Environment Committee vote threatens Europe&#8217;s aluminium industry</title>
<description><![CDATA[ <p align="justify"> </p><p align="justify"><strong><font color="#ff6600">A key part of the EUs climate change policy the Emission Trading System (ETS) could destroy the economic viability of Europes aluminium industry.</font> The European Parliaments Environment Committee recognised the impact of CO2 costs passed into electricity prices (indirect effects) as one of the criteria for carbon leakage, as it has a large negative effect on the competitiveness of energy intensive industries. Therefore, it is inexplicable that the Committee failed to adopt provisions for a legal mechanism to address this problem.</strong></p>]]></description>

<title>EAA goes to the European Parliament to advocate for greener cars in Europe</title>
<description><![CDATA[ <p> </p><p align="justify"><strong>On June 5th in the European Parliament, the European Aluminium Association advocated more ambitious and more objective targets for the reduction of CO2 emissions from passenger cars.</strong> Emission targets based on the mass of vehicles are not likely to ensure that the overall reduction goal of an average 130g/km of CO2 will be met. Nor will the legislative measure proposed by the European Commission be able to ensure that the 140g/km target set for 2008 is met any earlier than 2015, if met at all.</p>]]></description>

Clemente González is president of Grupo Alibérico, a leading European aluminium group of companies active on a wide range of aluminium end-use markets including packaging. Clemente González has a long experience in the aluminium industry for which he has been working for almost 40 years in different leading positions. He is vice-president of the European Aluminium Foil Association EAFA and president of the Container Group of EAFA.</div>]]></description>
