The 11th INALCO conference New Frontiers in Light Metals will be held at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands on June 23-25, 2010. It will consist of keynote lectures by invited speakers as well as oral and poster presentations of papers submitted by attendees.

Architecture, Construction, Design, Transport, Automotive, Surface treatment, Light Metals Technology, Recycling and New Applications are topics to be considered. An exhibition of new developments as well as an excursion programme will also be prepared.

The European Aluminium Association (EAA) is pleased to announce that Marcos R. Ramos of Alcoa is the new EAA Chairman. Mr. Ramos succeeds Alcoa’s Rudi Huber who has successfully led the organisation as of the start of Alcoa’s EAA chairmanship January 1st, 2009. The appointment of Marcos Ramos as the new EAA Chairman follows the retirement of Mr. Huber which was announced by Alcoa in March. Marcos Ramos, President of Alcoa’s European Region and Primary Products Europe, will take on his role as Chairman of the EAA as of June 1st 2010, until the end of Alcoa’s EAA Chairmanship on December 31st 2010.

The European Aluminium Association (EAA) welcomes the EU Competitiveness Council conclusions on clean and energy-efficient vehicles. These conclusions constitute a positive first step in the direction of technology neutrality, with the Council stressing the importance of considering a wide range of technologies, and stressing the need to explore the opportunities offered by weight reduction.

The overall recycling rate for aluminium beverage cans in the enlarged EU 27 including EFTA countries and Turkey further improved in 2008 and stands now at 63.1%. It has improved from 61.8% in 2007, respectively 57.7% in 2006. This 5.4% increase over the past two years represents an impressive extra carbon footprint saving of more than 310,000 tons of CO₂ equivalents.

The European Aluminium Association (EAA) supports the European Commission’s new strategy on greener vehicles. This proposal does represent a step forward in the creation of a better regulatory and fiscal environment that will stimulate demand for low CO₂ emitting cars. However, an integral part of this strategy should be the overall weight reduction of vehicles – one of the easiest and most cost effective measures that can be implemented immediately.  This has not yet been addressed comprehensively in the strategy and should be.

According to a new study on the impact of steel, magnesium and aluminium front end parts on the energy use and CO₂ emissions of passenger cars, aluminium was the environmental winner. Lifecycle analysis shows that an aluminium solution yields both a 20 percent energy and CO₂ emissions reduction, compared to the traditional steel structure.

In January 2010, the Building Group of the European Aluminium Association - EAA joined the BUILD UP initiative as a Partner, following an invitation from the European Commission. Replacing the former EPBD Buildings Platform since 16 June 2009, www.buildup.eu is a new environment for building professionals, local authorities and building occupants willing to share their experience on how to cut energy consumption in buildings, said Andris Piebalgs, European Energy Commissioner.

Aluminium producing and processing companies show clear commitment to the welfare of their workers. Whether by involving external expertise, or by harnessing the latest information and communication technologies effectively, they do their best to improve the work conditions of their employees. In the 2009 edition of its bi-annual Safety Solutions Competition, the European Aluminium Association (EAA) singled out Alcoa and Hydro for outstanding innovative solutions.

At the European Aluminium Congress 2009 with its motto Aluminium Automotive Applications - Material for Lightweight Construction and design, the various applications of aluminium currently used in cars will be presented. Potential future developments will be outlined that will make vehicles of the future even lighter and more energy efficient while maintaining or even improving todays safety standards.

Isabelle Durant, vice-president of the European Parliament and co-president of Belgium's green party Ecolo, presented the winners of the second European Aluminium in Renovation Award 2009, in the European Parliament's Brussels premises.

It is highly symbolic that such an award ceremony should be held on the very day and in the very place when and where, a few hours earlier, the European Parliament, Council and Commission had announced their agreement on Europe's next directive on the energy performance of buildings...

The European Aluminium Association is fully supportive of efforts for a low carbon future in automotive and transport and has contributed in close cooperation with the European Automotive Industry to introduce numerous innovative light-weighting solutions based on aluminium and aluminium alloys.

However, EAAs Automotive and Transport Market Group chairman Roland Harings points out: Our industry is highly concerned that, in its current shape, the proposal ignores the most straightforward option for emission reductions which is lightweighting, and which can be applied immediately.

As the seventh European Legislature kicks off, the European Aluminium Association seized the opportunity of its yearly general assembly in Brussels to invite the representatives of Commission, Council and Parliament to a visit of the recently opened Europalia China exhibition in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts on 14 October. Around 200 guests gathered to make the event a definite success.

Given current economic conditions and in line with expectations European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) figures for the first half of 2009 show a 13% fall in members alufoil production, compared with the first six months in 2008 to 371,400 t.

BRUSSELS, June 25, 2009 – In the middle of the European Green Week 2009 (23-26 June), the European-based aluminum industry is pointing a spotlight at its historical commitment to adding its immeasurable value to a greener, more sustainable society. While sustainable consumption and production have only recently arrived to the top of the EU’s political agenda, Europe’s main aluminum producers and users can look back at 10 years of cutting edge experience and production to showcase their results in light-weighting, life-cycle thinking, reduced CO₂ emissions.

The overall recycling rate for aluminium beverage cans in Western Europe further improved in 2007 and stands now at 61.8%, an increase by 10% compared to the year 2005. This 10% increase represents an impressive saving of 300,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas equivalents.

The French city ordinarily hosting the European Parliament and the Council of Europe welcomed this time the 2009 "Journée de l'Acier" (Steel Day) organised by Dow Jones to address timely challenges and hot topics in the metals industry. Invited to present the perspective of the steel-challenger Aluminium, EAA's de Schrynmakers seized the opportunity to stress some often overlooked facts.

A key part of the EUs climate change policy the Emission Trading System (ETS) could destroy the economic viability of Europes aluminium industry. The European Parliaments Environment Committee recognised the impact of CO2 costs passed into electricity prices (indirect effects) as one of the criteria for carbon leakage, as it has a large negative effect on the competitiveness of energy intensive industries. Therefore, it is inexplicable that the Committee failed to adopt provisions for a legal mechanism to address this problem.

5 Awards and 2 Special Prizes were given by the Jury of the 2008 European Aluminium Award competition for Industrial Design & Engineering. 48 companies with an innovative product that incorporates aluminium were taking part in this year's European Aluminium Award. 30 entries were nominated in 5 categories.

On June 5th in the European Parliament, the European Aluminium Association advocated more ambitious and more objective targets for the reduction of CO2 emissions from passenger cars. Emission targets based on the mass of vehicles are not likely to ensure that the overall reduction goal of an average 130g/km of CO2 will be met. Nor will the legislative measure proposed by the European Commission be able to ensure that the 140g/km target set for 2008 is met any earlier than 2015, if met at all.
